Groundwater Hydrogeochemical and Quality Appraisal for Agriculture Irrigation in Greenbelt Area, Iraq

This study highlights the groundwater hydrogeochemical characteristics and processes (hydrochemistry characteristics, ion exchange, salinization) quality suitability assessment for irrigation purposes from five wells in Greenbelt area located northwestern Al-Najaf Governorate, Iraq. The of was assessed based on water index (IWQI) thirteen parameters indices such as total dissolved solids (TDS), electrical conductivity (EC), sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), soluble percent (SSP), residual carbonate (RSC), hardness (TH), permeability (PI), potential salinity (PS), Kelley’s (KR), magnesium hazard (MHR). IWQI’s average values ranged between 76–139. results IWQI first second sampling sites showed 139 104, respectively, indicating that unsuitable unsafe irrigation. In contrast, third, fourth, fifth were 83, 97, 76, safe possibly used EC, TDS, PS, MHR all found to be sites, KR also agricultural about 80% while it SAR, SSP, RSC, PI, TH suitable As a result this study, has been determined is For sustainable exploitation, advised continuous water-quality-monitoring program should implemented, well development management practices.
